FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHY SHOULD I BOOK WITH AUDERIE PHOTOGRAPHY?

If you are looking for photography with an airy, natural-light, minimalistic look that is authentic, tasteful and relaxed but sophisticated, we'd be a great fit. I retouch skin with a light hand and my goal is to embrace and celebrate the female body (no matter the size or skin tone) and all its marks of change.

That being said, photography is art and I am the artist. Art is subjective, so my style may not be suited to everyone. If you prefer a moodier look with dark tones, or bright and colorful tones, or a blemish-free, glamorous, highly-airbrushed look akin to a magazine cover, then I have a list of local photographers that may be a better fit for your vision.

My inquiry process is specifically designed to make sure we are both a good fit for each other BEFORE you make a booking so that you will be happy with the photos you receive. The quality and style you see on my site is what you should expect back from a session. It would be unrealistic to commission Picasso for a painting and expect the final product to look like a Da Vinci. I hope that you will choose the right photographer for you that fits the art style that you genuinely love so that you will love your photos.

DO YOU OFFER OUTDOOR SESSIONS? WHY NOT?

I currently only offer in-studio sessions. My studio is located in San Francisco, CA atop a hill with beautiful expansive views of San Francisco. Photographing indoors allows both of us more flexibility in regards to when we can have your session that is not weather dependent.

Most outdoor shoots have to be done when lighting us best, which is shortly before the sun rises or shortly before the sun sets (golden hour). Unfortunately, this does not often match up to naptime/bedtime schedules of our clients' children. Outdoor lighting and weather is also unpredictable. Shooting indoors allows me to maintain a consistent style across all my photos. Thankfully, due to the large windows in the studio, all studio images will be shot with ample, natural-light or a combo of natural and studio lighting to obtain that light and light, organic feel.

Also, due to the skin-baring boudoir nature of some of the photos, client comfort is my top priority. Shooting indoors provides this level of privacy most clients seek.

WHY DOES PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY COST SO MUCH?

Most people only consider the length of a photo session when assessing whether the price matches how much they value a session. However, photographers do a majority of their work after your session is over, often spending anywhere from 4-8 hours editing and retouching your photos.

When you book a professional photographer, you are paying for their photography expertise, time invested in education, web app subscriptions for editing and hosting your photos, studio rental fees (aka $$$$ real estate in the Bay Area), access to the client wardrobe, photo props/furniture, photography gear, and all other operating costs of running a business. After all these overhead expenses, what remains is hopefully a reasonable Bay Area salary to keep up with the high cost of living, especially if photography is their main source of income and they don't have a high-earning spouse/partner to fill in the financial gaps. Art is passion, but it's never easy.

WHERE IN SAN FRANCISCO IS YOUR STUDIO? WILL PARKING BE AN ISSUE?

The studio is located in the 94112 zip code in a neighborhood called University Mound. We are located on a quiet residential street.

Parking is rarely an issue because I typically try to reserve one driveway parking space for clients so that no circling around the block will be required.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO THE PHOTOSHOOT?

I have a carefully curated client wardrobe that customers are welcome to borrow from at no additional cost. I have hand-picked apparel that is neutral in color, size-inclusive, and will look best with my photography style. Some clients choose to wear their own wardrobe, and some choose to do a mix of both. We will discuss this during your pre-shoot video call and a style guide will be emailed to you. During your session, we will have time for 3-4 looks total to be photographed in.

WHEN SHOULD I TAKE MY MATERNITY PHOTOS?

Maternity photos are best taken between 28-35 weeks of pregnancy. This way we can ensure your beautiful round bump is visible, but you are not yet at the point of extreme discomfort as there will be a lot of sitting and standing up as we switch poses. If you are having carrying multiples or are experiencing pregnancy complications, we suggest doing your shoot around 24-30 weeks of pregnancy.

As for booking your maternity shoot, please contact me after you've reached your 18th week of pregnancy. A non-refundable deposit of $75 will be required to hold your session date and time. However, pregnancy is unpredictable and we will try our best to reschedule if needed due to extenuating circumstances or offer credit for a future session, but it cannot be guaranteed and will be based on availability.

I'M NOT A MODEL, WILL YOU TELL ME WHAT TO DO?

Yes! I will give you clear directions and guidance on how to pose to best flatter your features in a natural way - from where to place your limbs to which direction to look in. I will also constantly check in to make sure the pose is comfortable and safe for you and baby.

However, my favorite photos are often candid ones of a client laughing or making up their own poses while feeling silly. If you take a look at my reviews, you will see that many clients find they feel very reassured with my direction and nurturing demeanor (skills I've acquired from having been a teacher and a mother!). Also, having a pre-shoot video call will also help ease the nerves of meeting each other for the first time.

WILL YOU PROVIDE ME WITH THE UNEDITED, ORIGINAL RAW FILES AFTER THE SESSION?

Professional photographers typically do not give out unedited, raw files because it is an incomplete, inaccurate representation of their work. For this same reason, sharing a professional photo with a filter that was not applied by the photographer is also discouraged. All raw files will be the exclusive property of Auderie Photography.

WHEN WILL I RECEIVE MY PHOTOS?

I typically aim to provide 5 sneak peek, watermarked photos within a week of your session. The full gallery will be available for your viewing and selection within 3-5 weeks of your session. I try my best to keep your due date in mind when delivering photos.

HOW MANY PHOTOS WILL I RECEIVE AFTER THE SESSION?

We offer three different levels of digital photo packages you can choose from. See the Pricing section of the webpage for more information.

I really enjoyed my maternity session with Erika. I felt at ease, relaxed and happy - much thanks to Erika’s professionalism, patience, kindness and attention to detail throughout the shoot. She prompted me more than once to confirm I was comfortable with certain poses, ensured I had privacy, ensured I was feeling great in my skin and wardrobe - there was a never a moment of uncomfortableness and there’s something to be said for a photographer that can transfer that feeling to her clients! The studio was also very airy and clean.

- Client H. H., June 2022

"Erika has a kind and easy energy, that makes it easy to feel comfortable. It felt so special to honor my incredible body in this special moment in time.

I get so nervous when the camera is on me and super awkward. Erika helped to add gentle words and nudges to help me relax and be a bit more natural. In addition, as a really busty, plus size woman, I wasn’t sure if and how her offerings may work or fit. She had stunning choices to pick from that truly highlighted my beautiful curves."

-Client Jordan A., June 2022.

Erika was so kind and welcoming during my maternity shoot. It was my first time being in front of the camera and despite my nerves, she made me feel comfortable and beautiful about the whole experience. Would definitely recommend her to other Mamas-to-be!

-Client Sophia D., June 2022

I went in for a maternity shoot with Erika in my 8th month of pregnancy. I appreciated how organized she was and everything from the first time we had contact, to the session, to after was very well thought through.

In person, at the session, Erika was warm and thoughtful and instantly made me feel comfortable. I could tell she had put thought into her photography space, the costumes and the props. She also experimented with various set ups and poses that worked for my huge bump at the time.

Erika got to know me as a person vs a client and I could relate to her own story as a mom. I’d recommend her to anyone wanting not just maternity pictures but a warm experience while doing that.

- Client Nadia G., June 2022.

Erika was an amazing photographer. She made me feel comfortable and at ease during my maternity photoshoot especially since I chose to take semi-nude pics. She also has a great eye for light, neutral colors, poses and garments for enhancement. She has a natural approach to photography. I also appreciated that she worked with my natural beauty. I would hire her again and recommend her 150%!
